Dr Alex George

Dr Alex George first came to prominence when he took part in the 2018 series of Love Island, becoming a popular figure for his looks as well as his personality.

Before his first brush with fame, Alex was working as an A&E Doctor, a career he initially went back to before also working as a GP. He now has a particular passion for mental health issues, following the sad suicide of his brother. Determined to use his newfound public platform for good, he left his job as an A&E doctor in early 2022 to focus more on the mental health and wellbeing side to medicine.

In 2021, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson named Dr Alex George the UK Government’s Youth Ambassador for Mental Health thanks to his years of campaigning for greater mental health support. From reality TV to Instagram to the British government, Alex now advises corporate clients on how to support their employees’ mental health.

More About

DR ALEX GEORGE – MEDICAL WORK

Signing up to Love Island in 2018, Dr Alex George was hoping to find love; but instead, he won the heart of the nation. His down-to-earth and personable nature made him a fan favourite and gave him the platform he needed to improve people’s lives.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he documented his frontline duties in his local hospital, taking to social media to highlight the negative effects of lockdown on young people struggling with their mental health. One of Alex’s biggest goals is to change the perception around mental health, comparing it to physical health. He believes that, just as physical health is taken seriously and steps are made to improve it, mental health is often thought about in a negative manner.

DR ALEX GEORGE – TV WORK

His popularity has seen him appear on a number of top-rated TV programmes including Lorraine (2018-2021), Celebrity Masterchef (2019), This Morning (2019), Loose Women (2018), The One Show (2020-2021) and Sky News (2021); he has also worked as the Health Editor for Good Morning Britain (2018-2020).

In 2021, he produced his first documentary for BBC One and Children in Need, Dr Alex: Our Young Mental Health Crisis. In the programme, he followed the journeys of a number of young British people who are living with mental health problems. He explored the difficulties they were having and looked into how local projects – some funded by Children in Need – are making a difference.

DR ALEX GEORGE – HEALTH AMBASSADOR

Sadly, in 2020, Alex’s brother LlÅ·r took his own life. This tragic event saw him become passionate about mental health, especially among children and adolescents. Since then, he has worked alongside a number of charities such as Mind, YoungMinds and the Anna Freud Centre to ensure mental health is included in the national curriculum alongside Maths, English and Science.

In 2021, he was appointed the Government’s Youth Mental Health Ambassador, as well as a member of the Mental Health in Education Action Group. They were particularly focussed on how children returned to the classrooms after the COVID-19 lockdowns.

In November 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of law from the University of Law in recognition of his work as Youth Mental Health Ambassador. The following year, he was awarded another honorary degree, this time from the University of Exeter for his work in psychological support for young people.

Testimonials

We were eager to work with Dr Alex after developing our Emotional Pillar within Consumer Experience for L’Oréal Professional Products Division. Alex is a great figure, doing some amazing things to raise awareness and amplify the topic of mental health and he did not disappoint. He inspired the delegates and got people thinking about the important topic. He was on time for every meeting and even when we made a last-minute date and time change he accepted and adapted without any complaints. Alex was inspiring, professional and relatable throughout and we will definitely be looking to work with him again.
Gayatri, L’Oréal

10/10 for an amazing fireside chat with Dr Alex George who went above and beyond. The conversation flowed and how very open and humble he was. He spoke to our people and continued the conversation we had been having as a company around mental health. Everyone found the session engaging and very helpful. We have received so much great feedback from our people, so thank you Dr Alex.
