Ed Vaizey was born in London in 1968, the son of distinguished economist and life peer John Vaizey, and renowned art historian Marina Vaizey. He received his early education at St Paul’s School, before reading History at Merton College, Oxford. After graduating, he qualified as a barrister, focusing on family and child law. Early in his career, Ed worked closely with senior Conservative politicians, including Kenneth Clarke and Michael Howard, as an adviser on education and employment policy.

Ed’s political journey began in 1997 when he stood as the Conservative candidate for Bristol East. He went on to support Iain Duncan Smith during the 2001 general election and became a speechwriter for Michael Howard until 2004.
Known for his modernising stance within the Conservative Party, Ed played a role in shaping the party’s policy and public image in the early 2000s. In 2005, he was elected MP for Wantage, securing a decisive majority.
During his time in Parliament, he held various positions including membership on the Modernisation and Environmental Audit Select Committees, Deputy Chair of the party’s Globalisation and Global Poverty Policy Group, Shadow Culture Minister, and later, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries.

Under his leadership, the sector grew at three times the rate of the wider economy.

He protected the policy of free admission to national museums and secured £150 million in capital investment to upgrade museum storage and improve long-term collection care. He played a pivotal role in restructuring English Heritage, leading to the creation of Historic England and the English Heritage Trust.
