Richard McCann

Richard McCann is a motivational speaker, coach, workshop facilitator and author of three bestselling books that tell his personal story of surviving after extreme adversity.

At the age of just five, Richard experienced the loss of his mother in horrific circumstances, her death at the hands of serial killer Peter Sutcliffe. After his mother’s murder, he was then brought up by his often drunk and violent father, living on a tough council estate in Leeds, England.

This led to turbulent times in foster care and an unsettled school life, which he left with no qualifications. Richard found himself with no prospects, making mistake after mistake, and landing himself in prison, ironically the same prison as his mother’s killer.

On his release from prison, he hit rock bottom, feeling he had zero prospects and no reason to live; he shared a suicide pact with his sister.

Richard McCann Books

In 2005, Richard published his first book Just A Boy: The True Story Of A Stolen Childhood, a heart-breaking but also uplifting story of survival and hope. The book tells of Richard’s childhood, with his two sisters, from one violent home to another, forgotten by all except the media. Without love or support they spiralled away from help or happiness. The book shares how Richard realised no one was going to rescue their lives but him and charts his inspirational transformation. The book tells how the forgotten children of violence suffer, and how they can heal. A heart-breaking, uplifting story of survival and hope.
Following the success of Just A Boy, Richard published his second book The Boy Grows Up: The inspirational story of his journey from broken boy to family man in 2007. This is an account of how Richard used the success of Just A Boy to try and help his sister, and his attempts to make sense of his past while at the same time learning more about the impact of trauma and loss in childhood. He becomes a voluntary counsellor and visits prisons, coming to terms with his traumatic childhood by talking to others and learning about how to accept the past and move on.
The third in the trilogy Just a Man chronicles Richard’s journey, as he is tested repeatedly, until he realises that the spirits of our loved ones are always around us, something he had thought since he lost his mum when he was five years old.

Testimonials

Undoubtedly one of the best courses I have ever been on! I cannot recommend Richard highly enough and I will definitely be working with him again in the future.
Steve Hanson, CEO, Callidus

We had the pleasure of hearing Richard speak at our annual Leadership Conference yesterday, and I couldn’t recommend highly enough! Whilst listening to pretty challenging subject matters, Richard brought humour and fun and really connected with us all in the audience. If you are wanting to find a motivational speaker who can challenge mindsets and encourage people to reframe their thought processes, Richard would be a great place to start. Thank you for an inspiring session!
Heather Stewart, Head of Talent and Professional Development, Skipton Building Society

Richard is an excellent speaker who keeps you engaged from the word go, even with a shocking start in life, there is no pity involved when he talks and although his story is at the extreme end he is able to relate to his audience and show how he used his low points as a catalyst to spur him forwards and not to wallow, the areas he touches upon how his experiences can help us in both our work and personal lives, he gives you the tools and it’s up to you how or if you use them. I would highly recommend Richard to any Company wanting to boost morale and look at problems as “Opportunities”.
