Baroness Ruth Hunt graduated from the University of Oxford in 2001 with a BA in English Language and Literature, but she didn’t immediately leave. After graduating, she became the President of the University’s Student Union, and then the Student Funding Officer. Following that, she started work as a Policy Officer for Universities UK.

She is a Visiting Fellow at Jesus College Cambridge and brings an academic rigour to her work whilst being accessible to her audiences regardless of background.

BARONESS RUTH HUNT | CAREER

In 2005, she was named the CEO of Stonewall, Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ charity. During her 15 years there, she played an integral part in leading landmark campaigns on issues such as homophobia in school, and the Rainbow Laces campaign for the Premier League. Whist at Stonewall, she worked alongside organisations including the Home Office, the UK Border Agency, Accenture, and the Ministry of Defence.

As Chief Executive, Ruth was involved in their campaign on the Same Sex Couples Marriage Bill, and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008. One of her big projects was to spearhead their commitment to trans quality, a move that has consulted over 700 trans people to help create real change for trans people.

As well as her work in parliament, Ruth, alongside her partner Caroline, are Directors of Deeds and Words, working with organisations of all sizes and industries to deliver interventions that achieve positive shifts in the cultures of working.

In 2020, Ruth edited The Book of Queer Prophets, containing a collection of essays on religion and sexuality, dedicated to “the countless queer people who continue to find the courage to speak truth to power. We are channels of peace and we bring so much love to the world”.
