More About

Candice Brathwaite is a prominent advocate who has made a significant impact with her work on motherhood and diversity. She passionately addresses the unique experiences of black British mothers through her writing, via her books and through other publications. But her advocacy extends beyond literature, and actively engages in discussions and panels on topics including parenting, race, and societal inclusivity.

It was following the birth of her daughter that sent Candice on a mission to make motherhood more inclusive. After having a Caesarean – instead of the home birth she had initially wanted – she was convinced something wasn’t quite right. She was sweating all night and had a lump on her scar – both things were dismissed as normal for new mothers. But one night, she felt something was definitely wrong, and by the time she had reached the hospital, she was going into septic shock. It took her over a month to recover and return home to her new baby, but this experience had unsurprisingly affected her mental health.

She found out that black British mothers in the UK are five times more likely to die in childbirth than a white woman; black babies have a 121% increased risk of being stillborn; and black babies have a 50% increased risk of dying within 28 days of birth.

Whilst this experience may have been traumatic for Candice and her family, she believes it gave her a wider purpose: “I am at the forefront of a discussion that will hopefully save women’s lives”.
