Chris Hines MBE Hon.D.Sc

Chris Hines MBE has spent over 30 years campaigning for the environment and inspiring positive change.

He was the co-founder and director of Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) from 1990 to 2000. Regarded as “some of the Government’s most sophisticated environmental critics” by the BBC and “Britain’s coolest pressure group” by The Independent, SAS helped deliver massive environmental improvements. He then became the sustainability director for the Eden Project for five years, which involved him conceiving and delivering ‘Waste Neutral’, an early version of the circular economy.

He is now the owner of A Grain of Sand, a company dedicated to saving the environment. Shortlisted for the 1999 Green Politics Award and having provided evidence to Commons and Lords Committees, Chris is now booked as a highly-popular sustainability and environment speaker.

Chris Hines at the Eden Project

During his five years at The Eden Project, Chris managed the Waste Neutral concept. Similar to being carbon neutral, being waste neutral was their aim to balance what was being sent for recycling and disposal with what was being bought in a recycled products. As well as this, Chris was responsible for Eden’s sustainability programme, aiming to ensure that Eden practiced what they preached and became a leader in its own operations. Chris often said the worst part of his job there was sitting at his desk; he wanted to be out there in the thick of it, knee-deep in rubbish to help make The Eden Project as sustainable as possible.

Chris Hines – A Grain Of Sand Objectives:

Chris Hines set up A Grain of Sand in 2009, an organisation that works to help inspire, catalyse, and drive positive change in a range of areas. With a strong proven track record in campaigning and communications, sustainability and environmentalism, they focus on finding positive solutions to problems, creating the environment and agenda for change, and making a different to the world we live in. A Grain of Sand works in six key aspects to achieve their goals.
  • Inspire: Inspiring and motivating change is a key part of A Grain of Sand’s manifesto. They achieve this through motivational talks as well as masterclasses and workshops on campaigning, leadership and sustainability. Chris has delivered these kinds of classes to the senior management of companies from the National Grid to the Women’s Institute.
  • Campaign: A Grain of Sand believe that strong campaigning is vital for delivering positive change. They believe that massive resources are used to persuade the public to make decisions, such as in a general election, and they believe this experience should be shared to better the world.
  • Communicate: Communication has always been a key part of humanity, and A Grain of Sand equally think it is vital. Communication is key to help issues such as climate change as well as to the success of small and large businesses.
  • Measure: The only way any positive change will happen is if you recognise that the current situation is not the right one. Change requires that you know which situation you want to be in, and what you have to change to get there. A Grain of Sand helps measure and assess situations which can then allow for efficient targeting of vital resources.
  • Solutions: We all find it easy to complain about a problem, but it’s not as easy to find and implement a solution. A Grain of Sand believe that the 21st Century is about delivering efficient solutions to problems and to create an environment for those solutions to be implemented.
  • Celebrate: No matter how difficult the situation may be, it is important to celebrate any positive steps and achievements, whether as an individual or an organisation. Bringing people together to celebrate is an important part of positive change. If you’re after a speaker who is passionate, informed, empowering, hands on and positive about environmental change, then Chris Hines is the man for you.
