Eddie The Eagle

Eddie the Eagle Edwards is an English ski jumper and Olympian who in 1988 became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping.

Eddie’s journey from working as a plasterer in Cheltenham to the slopes of Calgary in 1988 is a classic story of the underdog and an illustration of what can be achieved when following one’s dream.

With limited resources, second-hand equipment, and little formal support, he defied convention and captured the hearts of millions worldwide.

Eddie the Eagle finished last in both the 70m and 90m events at the Olympics but he became a legend for his fearless determination. His brave performance has been watched millions of times.

More than three decades later, Eddie is still in the public eye with films, books, and media appearances, with Eddie a popular motivational speaker.

More About

Growing up in Cheltenham in a working-class family of plasterers, Eddie the Eagle Edwards developed a fascination for skiing after trying it for the first time on a school trip to Italy at the age of 13. Determined to pursue the sport, he honed his skills on local dry slopes while working in the family trade to fund his ambitions.

When opportunities in downhill skiing proved limited, Eddie spotted an unusual opening – ski jumping. At the time, Great Britain had no active competitors in the discipline, offering him an unconventional pathway to the Olympic stage.

Eddie the Eagle | Road to the Olympics

Eddie’s path to Olympic competition was anything but ordinary. Initially an aspiring downhill skier, he narrowly missed out on a place in the British squad for the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo. Refusing to give up, he switched his focus to ski jumping, a sport in which the UK had been absent for more than six decades.

With no official training structure, minimal resources, and virtually no financial backing, Eddie’s preparation relied on ingenuity and perseverance. He trained wherever possible, often sleeping in cars or abandoned buildings to keep costs down. His skis were borrowed, his boots were patched together with tape, and his helmet was a cast-off from the US team.

In 1986, Eddie travelled to Lake Placid, New York, to learn the fundamentals of ski jumping, competing against rivals with years of professional coaching. Funding his career meant juggling various jobs, from plastering and babysitting to grass cutting and cooking.

To qualify for the 1988 Calgary Olympics, Eddie had to meet the International Ski Federation’s minimum performance standards by competing in international events. Against all odds, he did so, often travelling solo, lugging his own kit via public transport, and staying in budget accommodation.

In 1988, Eddie officially earned his place on Team GB, becoming Britain’s sole ski jumping representative and an instant media talking point.

At the Calgary Games, Eddie competed in both the 70m and 90m ski jump events. He faced considerable disadvantages: weighing several kilograms more than the next heaviest competitor, and wearing thick prescription glasses beneath his goggles — which often fogged up mid-jump due to the cold air at altitude.

Despite finishing last in both events, Eddie’s unshakable enthusiasm and determination captured the hearts of fans and the global media. Crowds roared in support, applauding his courage and commitment rather than focusing on his ranking.

His Olympic story became an enduring symbol of persistence, passion, and the belief that simply daring to take part can inspire millions.

Eddie the Eagle | Media Career

After Calgary, Eddie faced financial difficulties and was briefly declared bankrupt. He later earned a law degree from De Montfort University in 2003 and went on to build a varied career in public life.

He worked as a ski instructor, co-hosted a radio show, and even released music. On TV, Eddie appeared on Let’s Dance for Sport Relief, Winter Wipeout (which he won), and Splash! (mentored by Tom Daley, also winning the series). More recent appearances include The Masked Dancer and Dancing on Ice.

His autobiography, Eddie the Eagle: My Story, was published in 1988.

In 2016, his life story was adapted into the film Eddie the Eagle, starring Taron Egerton as Eddie and Hugh Jackman as a fictional coach, Bronson Peary. Although Eddie had no creative involvement, the film was a commercial success.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Eddie the Eagle! What an absolutely lovely guy. He was brilliant with everyone and really made the day very special. I hope he enjoyed it as much as everyone else did here. We would love to have him back as all the kids, parents and organisers want to run the event next year and of course bigger !!
Sandown Ski Centre

Eddie The Eagle Edwards was extremely friendly and interesting to talk too and we had a good chat in the Green Room whilst he was waiting to go on. What a lovely man! After delegates spend the day being ‘talked at’, where possible we always like to end our conference by having someone with an inspirational, heart-warming and interesting tale to tell mixed with just the right amount of humour to finish up, and Eddie did just that. He seemed to be a popular choice and some wanted to have their photo taken with him and talk to him afterwards, and he was most happy to stay and chat.
