Mark Maciver – otherwise known as SliderCuts – has been a barber and hair stylist since 2003. In that time, he has built up an impressive client list, including Stormzy and Tinie Tempah.

With a social media following of over 220,000 across platforms, Mark has built up an impressive platform where he documents his styling. His many years in the industry, plus his extensive knowledge of the business, make him a trusted figure in the community.

His skills have won him a Black British Business Award in 2018 and a nomination for an Evening Standard Business Award in 2019. He is often praised as one of the UK’s top black business owners.

As well as offering volunteering, apprenticeships and paid positions in his barbershop, Mark Maciver runs a runner scheme which helps support people aged 13-16 whilst imparting guidance for bettering their future. He also runs a SliderCuts masterclass and mini masterclass. They explore the fundamentals of being a successful barber and businessperson, providing essential tips and tricks to succeed in business.

One aspect of his career that Mark really appreciates is how comfortable the customer feels with them. They often talk about their difficulties, such as financial problems, and he believes “we all struggle at times in our lives, so I’m happy I can help in some way. Even if it’s just to listen.” He has since partnered with Mastercard for their “Nobody in the Dark” campaign, which helps the digitally and financially excluded.

In 2019, Mark released his debut book, Shaping Up Culture. It was released in conjunction with his YouTube channel and was full of practical tips and information on being a successful entrepreneur.

Mark has appeared on The Idol Podcast, where he spoke about overcoming your fears, running a successful business, and persevering until you succeed. In 2020, he spoke on the How to Cut it in the Hairdressing Industry podcast, talking about his determination, his commitment, and how to manage a thriving business and a young family.

Whilst he doesn’t necessarily see himself as a ‘celebrity barber’, he appreciates that the calibre of his clientele helps promote his work.

His past clients include boxer Anthony Joshua, basketball player Lebron James and footballers Wayne Routledge and Jermaine Jenas, actors Adam Deacon, Cynthia Erivo and Richard Blackwood, and singers Dizzee Rascal, Plan B, Marvin Humes, and Nelly.

As well as his successful barbershop, Mark is a popular speaker who wants to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation.

He joined a long list of leading figures, such as David Cameron and Bill Gates, working with Speakers for Schools. It was alongside them that he spoke to young people at school or home during the pandemic. He talked about how he started his business, how he managed to succeed, how to balance success, finding a work/life balance, monitoring physical and mental health, and important lessons he learnt along the way. He also used this opportunity to promote barbering and hairdressing as a serious career, not just a stopgap in people’s employment.
