Stacey Dooley – Documentary Work

Stacey Dooley began her career as a participant in the show Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts, where a group of fashion-conscious Brits travel to India to work in clothes factories that produce for the UK consumer. She became a popular personality on the show, and subsequently chose to host its sequels – Blood, Sweat and Takeaways, and Blood, Sweat and Luxuries. The series were so successful that Stacey earned a BAFTA nomination in 2009, and she has since presented a range of documentaries for the BBC.

Her self-titled show Stacey Dooley Investigates began in August 2009; two more programmes were shown in 2010, one on former child solders in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the second on sex trafficking and underage sex slavery in Cambodia.

Since then, she has presented Stacey Dooley Investigates: Tourism and the Truth where she investigated how tourism in Thailand and Kenya affects employees there, in particular with regard to wages, corruption and environmental changes. She also explored the dangerous world of Japan’s child pornography trade in Young Sex For Sale in Japan, and the missing indigenous girls of Canada in Canada’s Lost Girls.

From there, she presented My Hometown Fanatics (2012), filmed in her hometown of Luton, she interviewed Islamists and the English Defence League; and Coming Here Soon (2012) which explored the lives of young people in Greece, Ireland and Japan and how they have been affected by the global financial crisis.

Stacey spent some time in the United States in 2012 where she created Stacey Dooley in the USA, investigating issues affecting American teenagers such as Girls Behind Bars, Border Wars, Homelessness, and Kids in the Crossfire.

As well as her hard-hitting documentaries, Stacey has made guest appearances on shows including Celebrity Mastermind, Strictly Come Dancing (2018), and Children in Need (2018). She has also appeared on The One Show, Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, DNA Family Secrets, The Maked Dancer, and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

In 2018, Stacey published her first book, Stacey Dooley: On the Front Line With the Women Who Fight Back; in it, Stacey discusses sex trafficking, sex equality, domestic violence, and child exploitation, and became a Sunday Times bestseller.

Influenced greatly by her work, Stacey is a passionate advocate for welfare in developing countries and is an avid fundraiser for the cause, having hosted a number of charity events. She has also been a guest speaker on the BBC’s Newsnight and is a regular panellist on the current affairs show, The Wright Stuff on Channel 5. In 2015, Stacey was a judge for the Observer Ethical Awards and a panellist at the Edinburgh International Television Festival where she discussed the impact of visiting some of the world’s most dangerous places for her documentaries.
