Born in 1961, Wayne Hemingway’s earliest memories are of his mother and grandmother dressing up as Elvis, a Beatle, or Tarzan and being paraded up and down Morecambe pier or being held aloft in a wrestling ring by his Native American father. Those early child-modelling stints went some way towards influencing the youth who was forever experimenting with styles and cultures and reinventing himself whenever the next “big thing” came along.
In 1982, he completed a degree in geography and town planning at University College London, before completing an MA in fashion at the University of Surrey. One day he decided to sell his clothes and that of his now wife Gerardine at Camden Market. The realisation that money could be made from fashion suddenly dawned on him, and with Gerardine, he built Red or Dead into a label that received global acclaim. The label won the prestigious British Fashion Council’s Streetstyle Designer of the Year Award for an unprecedented three consecutive years.
After 21 consecutive seasons at London Fashion Week, Wayne and Gerardine sold Red or Dead in 1998, and in 1999 they set up HemingwayDesign. They are a multi-disciplinary design studio with projects that traverse sectors and clients including Shelter, Historical England, The National Archives, The National Portrait Gallery, Southbank Centre, and TFL.
